Teams from 23 schools across the region from under-8 to under-18s boys and girls will battle it out to be crowned FNQ’s finest in officially the biggest Queensland school futsal competition outside of Brisbane.
Redlynch Central Sports Stadium General Manager Tony Cifuentes said the annual titles, which first started in 2006 with only 60 teams competing, enable all schools from across the Far North to compete against each other over two weeks of pure futsal fun.
“We’re proud to host what is now one of the biggest interschool tournaments of any sport outside of Brisbane,” Mr Cifuentes said.
“It just keeps on getting bigger and better – for example, this year we’ve had a 33 per cent increase in team nominations from 2014, from a larger number of schools than ever before,” he said.
“There’s going to be a lot of frenetic and fast futsal action as the 147 teams all vie to be crowned FNQ School Futsal Champions for 2015.”
The 10th running of the tournament starts on Tuesday May 19 at 8am with the under-10 and under-11 boys competing; as each day sees a different age group take to the futsal courts.
The final day of competition will be on Friday, May 29, for the under-14 and under-16 girls competitions.
The tournament also acts as a selection process for the FNQ Cairns United FC representative teams, which will be selected to compete in the 2015 AFA National School Futsal Championships to be played on the Gold Coast in the September/October school holidays.
“From there, players have the opportunity to be selected to represent Australia and travel to different parts of the world to play, learn and experience different cultures within the international futsal community.”
The winners and runners-up from each age group in the FNQ School Titles will also be invited to compete in the National School Futsal Championships to be held in Brisbane later this year.
FNQ schools will take on the best school futsal teams from all over Australia in this tournament, striving for the prestigious title of national school futsal champions.
