The All Breeds Educational Dairy Camp will be held from October 3-6 at the Malanda Showgrounds.
The event is held every second year and generally draws about 60 interested youngsters from the Tablelands, Innisfail and Cairns regions.
This year’s camp will cover a list of topics including calf care, clipping, judging, parading, photographing and promoting dairy cattle. It will culminate with a calf day on October 6.
All Breeds Committee member and Malanda dairy farmer Greg English said the camp was aimed at engaging young people who may be interested in dairy farming.
“There are so many kids who show an interest in dairy cattle and that’s evidenced by the large turnout at our agricultural shows, both from private farms and school teams who prepare and show dairy cattle,” Mr English said.
The event will bring together breeders of the four main breeds on the Tablelands, being Holstein, Illawarra, Jersey and Brown Swiss, who are working together to promote the industry in the North.
“The camp’s primary goal is to give the participants an opportunity to learn more about dairy cattle but it goes beyond that,” Mr English said.
“It teaches them teamwork and about living together, as they camp on site for the duration.”
The camp starts at 9am on Wednesday, October 3. Early registration is $90 before September 1, or $100 after that date.
